Q: Why should I back this project?
A: By backing this project, you will be able to shoot CineStill 120 before it hits shelves worldwide, but more importantly you will be securing the continued availability of CineStill 120 at a competitive price point through our distributers. By the time you have created many beautiful images with the film you received and are ready to purchase more, you will be able to purchase it at local retailers at an affordable price.
Q: Where can I process CineStill Film?
A: CineStill can easily be processed at any standard photo lab or at home; C-41 or B&W.
Q: What do you see as the final price point per roll once this is in production? Thanks again.
A: Our goal is to make 120 rolls available around the world between $10-12USD (there is no way to perfectly predict the free market, but this is our goal). This is why the Indiegogo campaign is crucial. Going into production without your backing, would increase the cost per roll significantly, due to the larger cost of funding the startup of incrementally increased production.
Q: Is cinestill 120 converted 70mm?
A: CineStill 120 will be manufactured from a large special order material and will not have perforations. We converted and slit down 65mm material for Beta Testing our prototype process. The rolls of film we produced this way are the Beta Test rolls we are giving away before fulfillment of the campaign.
Q: How about “220” format? It’s twice as long and may give 220 users a good reason to hang onto their 220 equipment.
A: We would love to release a 220 version in the future, but 220 is more complicated, since there are two paper backings and two tape points that need to be perfectly aligned, and it requires it’s own precise specifications for accurate film transport. Our goal is to make medium format as accessible as possible and there are vastly more 120 compatible cameras out there.
Q: Is this just repackaged Motion Picture film, like the old films other companies offered years ago?
A: It is important to note that CineSill is NOT simply “repackaged” motion picture film. We utilize the same advanced technology in Motion Picture emulsion to create a still photography film which is modified for C-41 processing. This amazing material is converted to a different format and suitable for C-41 chemistry. Compared to the original motion picture stock, CineStill 800T C-41 responds with a slightly increased gamma yielding an 800 ISO Tungsten balanced negative, which is optimized for optical and hybrid still photography processes. Past companies who “repackaged” old unused motion picture stock, forced photographers to send the film back for makeshift motion picture lab processing, and generated a motion picture format negative that was compatible with motion picture printing. There are some advantages found in modern motion picture formats and processing e.g., anti-halation, antistatic, and lubricant rem-jet backing. However, the curves, lower gamma and base can prove problematic for traditional still imaging standards. CineStill Film is indeed motion picture film, which is modified then packaged for standard still photography lab processing. It harnesses the same outstanding performance and aesthetics found in many blockbuster films produced today, plus it is optimized for still photography workflows.
Q: What’s a “CineStill Film Maker”?
A: “CineStill Film Maker” members will get an inside track to all future CineStill plans, early access to limited releases, exclusive 5% off future orders from CineStillFilm.com, a say in what comes next, and other benefits from being a member of the CineStill family.
Current Estimated Shipping Date: August 2016
This is a very complex project and relies on many components and partners. It's difficult to predict when one of these things will cause a delay, or maybe make up for lost ground. We have had to wait two months longer than expected to receive our materials, but have caught up about a month by bringing in some outside engineers to help, and outsourcing some steps. Some of those outside engineers also caused delays, or their work had to be redone completely. But we are now on track to begin fulfillment in the next month if all continues well. We are working very hard to bring the highest quality product to market at a sustainable cost. Thanks for supporting craft film!
Last Updated At: 07/22/16What is BackerKit?
BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!
The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.
How does BackerKit work?
After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.
I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?
The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.
Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.
To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.
How do I update my shipping address?
BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.
When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?
That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.
I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?
As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
